Steve has owned a number of craft over the years, including the sailing boat Snowbird, narrow boat Excalibur, and Royal Fifer; a 33' classic wooden motor sailor built in 1962. Currently Steve enjoys sailing the Dolphin 33 'Reflex' in the Ionian Islands, Greece and is eagerly anticipating a return to the inland waterways.
Steve is an experienced and well respected marine surveyor with full professional indemnity insurance. He is also accredited as a Boat Safety Scheme Examiner and approved as an MCA Certifying Authority Examiner for commercial vessel coding, including the new Maritime Labour Convention requirements, as well as a registered International Marine Contractors Association auditor, and ISM Code Safety Management System Lead Auditor.
Steve is Moffatt Marine's Technical Director and has extensive marine and maritime experience, having spent most of his working life either in search and rescue, or survey and inspection with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). He was also the skipper of the MCA's largest vessel, MCA Hunter, for a number of years.
In addition he served 15 years with the RNLI on Clacton-on-Sea lifeboat. Steve is an accomplished Licenced Mariner holding an MCA BML for all offshore waters and having the PLA LKE endorsement for the River Thames, together with being an RYA commercial Offshore Yachtmaster, Power and Sail. Steve is a voluntary instructor with RYA accredited training school, TS Rebel and regularly takes student sailors and power boaters for courses on the Rebel Trust's fleet which include a large range of sail and power vessels.
Steve Moffatt has been on the water in one way or another for the last 42 years. Spending most of his working life either in search and rescue or survey and inspection. His experience started as a lad, when he worked with Dick Harman running the Nemo II and doing hourly trips on and off the beach at Clacton on sea in all weathers. It seemed a natural progression for Steve to join the lifeboat crew and remained in service for the next 15 year. During this time he became an offshore yacht master. Steve then joined the Coastguard service and during this career he trained as surveyor, Steves love of boats always has been with him, with some of the vessel he owned were Snowbird, Excalibur and of course the Miller Fifer, Royal Fifer, a 33ft wooden vessel built in 1962.
Steve still gives back to the community as a training skipper for the Rebel Trust, where he trains young people in sailing and motor boating, There he skippers, Westerlys, Sanartors, and a fleet of motor boats. Steve has been skilled is surveying all types of vessels and is an inland inspector and examiner for the Inland Water Ways trust as Boat safety Scheme examiner. He is also the Code Vessel surveyor for the RYA for the South East coast of England. He has a love and understanding of boating and has a pragmatic approach to all inspections and surveys, dealing with any requirements with a joint approach working with owners and the coding authorities.
He has a love both of inland waterways and off shore boating he understands the love and requirements of both. When he carries out a survey its the facts that are reported. He looks further and beyond the surface and can see a solution to a problem and also a protential to an underlining situation not yet noticed.As well as being a qualified boat surveyor and Member of the International Institute of Marine Surveyors, Steve is also an accredited Boat Safety Scheme examiner and an RYA Small Commercial Vessel Code surveyor and examiner. In addition, Steve is a highly qualified and experienced mariner who holds the BML and LKE (River Thames) specialist mariner accreditations.
He is also a qualified instructor with RYA accredited training school, The Rebel Trust.
